Are You Choosing to Remain Trapped?

The following is an excerpt from my latest book, ESCAPE: Break Free from Mediocre Christianity and Embrace the Radical, Set-Apart Life You were Made For.

It is in those quiet moments, when we finally realize there is a God who loves us standing outside our door, that we see the true character of God. He is not holding out on us. He didn’t banish us to this prison cell. We did. We willing thrust our wrists before Satan, allowing him to bind us. God allowed us to go because He gave us free will, but because of His great love for us, since that day in the Garden of Eden, He has not stopped pursuing us. For thousands of years, God has orchestrated and rewritten His Story in order to put a rescue plan in place.

The prison is unlocked! The prisoners’ shackles have been broken! But how many of us continue to remain trapped inside a lie we choose to believe?

Maybe you have opened the door. Maybe you’ve invited Jesus to step inside. Maybe you know Him intimately as the lover of your soul, yet you continue to live as a prisoner, the only difference being that Jesus now sits beside you as you clumsily pick at the locks on your chains. Perhaps now, for the first time in your life, you recognize that while you have accepted the freedom Jesus died to give you, you have never actually embraced that freedom.

Jesus loves us. He died for our freedom. But once we let Him in, dear Christian, His plan is not for us to remain there forever. Unfortunately, I have met far too many people, who claim to be Christ-followers, who do nothing of the sort. If we are following Christ, it will require us to follow Him outside the prison door. Once we repent, we must believe. Once we escape, we must embrace our freedom. We have been set free! It’s time to live as though it is true.

Let me remind you of what Paul so bluntly said in Galatians 5:1, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”

I imagine Paul shouting this phrase to the people of the church of Galatia. I can almost see him face-palming as he shakes his head saying, “C’mon, guys. Jesus set you free so you would be free! Why are you still living like you are a slave?”

Is Jesus asking you the same thing? “Why are you living like a slave when I have died to set you free? Why do you sit here in this prison cell when the door is standing wide open? The Kingdom of God awaits you! There is a whole world outside you have never even seen. I can’t wait to show you the amazingly wonderful story I have planned for your life.”

Maybe this is all new for you. Maybe you have heard about God’s Story before, but never like this. Maybe this all seems too good to be true: a loving God, a head-over-heels, crazy, in-love with you God who wants, no, NEEDS you! Since the moment He began writing His Story, you (Yes, you!), have been on God’s mind. He is eagerly pursuing you. He is standing outside your prison door knocking. Knocking and praying. Praying and knocking.

“Open the door, Beloved. I have missed you for far too long. I have loved you with an everlasting love, and I don’t want to live another second apart from you! Will you come? Will you follow me? Will you choose to live in a new story? Will you escape?”
