As someone with the personality of a dreamer and entrepreneur, I am very driven to seek the “next thing.” This plays out in my business, my family life, and especially in my relationship with God. Even just this week I was eagerly asking, “What do you have next for me, God? What are you saying I should be doing next? What is the next big thing?”
I was asking God these questions in regards to a reoccurring theme in my life, and do you know what I heard in response? Not a darn thing.
“But God, I need to know what to do next!” I persisted.
“I want to follow you, God, please tell me what to do next!”
After continually beating my head against the same wall for, what seemed like, the millionth time, I finally decided to be quiet and really listen to God.
So I asked Him, “God, what do you want to say to me right now?”
This time, God replied. “Now, that is precisely the right question: what do I want to say to you NOW?”
As it turns out, when I asked the right question, I got an answer. And do you know what I discovered? The “next thing” that God wants me to do is not the next thing at all. It’s the NOW thing.
“Stop seeking and focusing on what is next,” He said, “and start seeking and focusing on what is right now.”
For most of my life, I’ve been so eager to get to the next thing or focus on what I should be doing next, that I have completely neglected what is right now.
In the same way that a parent might tenderly speak to their child, I heard God say, “Eat what I have placed before you, then you can have some more.”
God has already given us our “next things.” They are our “now things.” We must show good stewardship over the “now.” There will always be a next “now” moment, but if we can’t devote ourselves to our current “now,” we will never get to the next “now.”
What is the “now thing” that God has placed before you? Focus on it. Be a good steward of it. And go do it. Right now!
