The secret of the Bible is not some deep, unsearchable mystery like the new age movement might try to convince. It is not bound up in esoteric knowledge like the Gnostics once believed. The secret of the Bible is indeed hidden, but it can be found. It is not obvious, but it is meant to be sought. And contrary to what various religious movements might persuade you, the secret of the Bible is not reserved for the elite. It is not for the few; it is for the many. But while this secret is for the many, only a few will discover it.
“Wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14)
This Secret is called Jesus, and it is the next chapter in God’s Story.
The Secret of Jesus
Throughout the gospels, Jesus is given the title “Son of God.” Now, if you’ve been following along as we’ve journeyed through God’s Story this summer, then you know that “sons of God” is the title held by the rebellious, celestial beings who led humanity astray. So how can this also be the title given to Jesus Christ, the Messiah?
Here’s the first thing we need to understand about the phrase “son of:” to us “son of” means the male child of so-and-so, but in the Bible, “son of” means “one who is like.” And this is very important to keep in mind when thinking about Jesus.
Jesus is not referenced as one of the sons of God; He is called the Only Begotten Son of God. A more accurate translation would be the “Unique, Only-One-of-His-Kind, Who is Like God.”
The sons of God in the Old Testament received their titles before they rebelled. Their likeness to Yahweh was represented by the authority He had given them and the fact that they, too, were spiritual beings. But the similarities stopped there. They did not reflect God or His character of love. They did not rule over the earth in a way that would establish God’s Kingdom.
But Jesus did!
In speaking of Jesus, Hebrews 1:3 tells us that, “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being.” And Colossians 1:19 tells us that “God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him.”
You see, Jesus was not the Son of God as in the child of God or one of the many celestial beings; Jesus was the exact representation of God–God in the flesh. He was fully God and fully man–God wrapped up in a human body.
He WAS God!
When you let this sink in and truly understand this concept, it starts to sound a bit bizarre. God physically placed Himself inside of a human body. But why?
Well, if you grew up in the church, you would answer, “Salvation of course!” And you’re right, but when we look at Jesus in the context of the whole story, what He did becomes even more amazing.
What Jesus Reveals
Before Jesus Christ walked the face of the earth, God’s character and identity were hidden. (Isaiah 45:15) The secret of the Bible was the true character of God.
God tried to represent His character through angelic ambassadors, but they rebelled. God then placed His very image in human beings with the intent to perfectly reflect His identity and reclaim stolen territory from the enemy, but we too rebelled. No one could accurately reflect the all holy love that is the character of God. It was only God Himself who could perfectly reveal Himself. For He is God and there is no other. He is God, and there is none like Him. (Isaiah 46:9) Jesus came to reveal to us the true character of God, because, “No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is Himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father…” (John 1:18)
Jesus was the exact representation of God. All of God’s character and essence dwelt within Him. So if you want to know what God is like, you need not look any further than Jesus!
And if that weren’t amazing enough, revealing God’s character was not the only reason why Jesus came.
You see, while Satan may have told God that the price to redeem us was too great, there was no amount that He could pay to have us back, God said, “What if I give you me?” In essence, the cross became God’s way of slapping a price tag on us declaring, “You are worth all of me!”
Something is only worth the price that is willing to be paid. The cross was not merely a get-out-of-jail-free-card. No. The cross was God’s way of revealing our true worth and identity.
In the life of this one man, Jesus Christ of Nazareth, God made the boldest revelation in all of history (His story). Jesus was the physical representation of the invisible God. We might even say that He was “made in God’s image…” Sound familiar? Jesus not only revealed our identity by ascribing our worth, He not only exposed the truth of God’s character, He perfectly represented what we as humans were always meant to be from the very beginning!
So what is a Son of God?
It is one human life that is completely and whole-heartedly yielded the Spirit of God Who lives inside of them. It is a person who is fully human and fully God’s Spirit. The Son of God is a person who, like Jesus, reflects God’s character of unrelenting love. It is a person who never waivers from reflecting God’s image, even if it means being obedient to death, even death on a cross. (Philippians 2:8)
This is the secret of the Bible. This is who we were created to be.
“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children [Sons] of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know Him [Jesus]. Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. All who have this hope in Him purify themselves, just as He is pure.” (1 John 3:1-3)
I said it before: this secret is not for the few; it is for the many. But while this secret is for the many, only a few will discover it. The gospel, the revealing of the secret, is not difficult to understand as some religious leaders will try to convince you. Rather, it is super easy to understand and incredibly difficult to carry out. We have been given the right to be called Sons of the Living God, to reclaim our title and role in this epic tale. This, friend, is God’s Story. It is a story of God’s unwavering love for us and of the war that is being waged to steal that love away. This is the greatest story ever told! But the question is, “Will you live in it?”
