drown me in Your sea_sm

I’m standing at the threshold of the unknown, the place where the earth fades away and disappears into a sea of endless blue. The cool water laps at the shore and rolls over my bare toes. A voice calls to me from somewhere beyond the deep, beckoning me forward, to step out into the water.

“Come.”

I hesitate, not knowing what lies ahead. The horizon stretches wide and uninterrupted. Not a single piece of land punctuates the view. Whitecaps roll in the distance, and waves beat heavy against the shore, mimicking the rhythm of my heart in my chest.

“Come.”

Cautiously, I step forward. My foot disappears beneath the water as the sea kisses my ankle.

“Come.”

My lower legs are buried as a wave threatens to overpower me. My feet fail, and I lose my footing. Another wave barrels into me, but just before I fall, I hear a calming voice steady me.

“Come.”

Dark clouds form an ominous line above the place where the ocean meets the sky. A rumbling in the distance warns me to come no further. The waters encircle my knees.

“Come.”

A flash of light. A blustery gale. A shiver travels up my spine as the cold, dark liquid swallows my legs.

“Come.”

My waist drops into the abyss as the waves swell. I wipe the spray from my eyes and brace myself against the storm.

“Come.”

More thunder. More lightning. I should turn back now. It’s not safe.

“Come.”

I can no longer see the shore. Night has descended with the storm. The wind howls against the waves, screaming at me to turn back.

“Come.”

I’m up to my chest in icy water. My breathing is labored as the cold presses in and suffocates. My foot slips. I catch myself just in time to keep my chin above the waves.

“Come.”

I brace myself against the storm. My lips beneath the water, my nose above, I’ve reached the end. I’ve gone as far as I can go. The storm threatens to drown me. The waves mock my attempts. I want to turn back.

“Come.”

Silence. I wait.

“Come.”

I hesitate.

“Come.”

Thunder. Lightning. Waves and storm.

A gentle voice. A tender whisper. An unspoken promise.

“Come.”

Ahead, the ocean swells. A wall of water forms. It rises, stretches, towering over me with a menacing growl.

“Come.”

Without a final breath I step forward. The ground falls away. My head slips beneath the surface as I fall. My body is enveloped in the darkness, but as I sink below, a warmth spreads over me. I’m swept down and up. The tower of water collapses above me. But below, I am rocked by the embrace of the sea. I’m wrapped in the warmth of the ocean. The surf above crashes violently, but I sway. I roll. I dance. I fly. I tumble downward. I’m swept upward. I’m consumed.

I breathe in, giving everything. Giving every piece of me. Holding nothing back. Not even my life. All is given. All is here. I am Yours. If Your love is an ocean, Lord, then drown me in Your sea.

It is only when we leave the safety of the shore that the waves of His love can crash upon us. What brave step is God calling you to make? Will you dare to obey when He extends His hand and says, “Come?”
