To Change the World, Go Here!

To Change the World, Go Here!

“People who change the world have one thing in common—there is one place they all go. It’s not a seminar, not a university, not a retreat center, not a mission trip to an impoverished country, not even a church.”

Let me ask you something, if this post would have been titled, “To be Mediocre, Go Here!” would you have stopped to read it?

In his book Die Empty, Todd Henry talks about the state of mediocrity. The word mediocrity comes from two Latin words: medius, which means middle, and ocris, which means rugged mountain. If we look at the origins of the word, it conjures up images that are much more intense than we might normally think. Rather than just meaning ordinary or moderate, mediocrity literally means to stop, or give up, halfway up the rugged mountain.

Each and every one of us have been created with a unique purpose that only we can fill. You are made for more. That purpose, your life’s mission you might say, is a mountain. And God is calling you to the top.

Just think about all of the world-changers in the Bible: It was on the top of a mountain that Moses first heard God speak, and it was on this same mountaintop that God later gave him the Ten Commandments.

It was high on the top of a mountain that God asked Abraham to sacrifice his one and only son. And because Abraham was faithful and committed, God spared Isaac and promised to make Abraham the father of all nations.

It was on top of Mount Carmel that Elijah proved to the prophets of Baal the power and existence of the One, True God.

It was because of Noah’s faith and obedience that he and his family were rescued from the floodwaters in the ark and landed safely atop the mountains of Ararat.

It was upon a high mountain that Peter, James, and John witnessed the miracle of their Lord, Jesus, being transfigured before there very eyes, revealing His divinity.

And it was there upon a mountaintop, the hill of Golgotha, that Jesus Himself changed the world forever.

I can’t even imagine what history would be like if even one of these individuals decided to stop halfway up the mountain, for it is on the tops of mountains where lives are changed.

Jesus said to His disciples, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” {Matthew 17:20}

But I submit to you that if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can press on, you can overcome, and you can endure past the halfway point and reach the top of the mountain.

What mountain are you facing, and where are you in your journey? Are you in the process of scaling its rugged peaks? Have you stalled and setup camp halfway to the top? Or are you standing at the mountain’s base, shielding your eyes as you gaze toward the apex, trying to get the courage to take the first step?
