What is this barren land I see?

Death is all around

Suffocating cold draws near

As snow falls on the ground

A white blanket stretched from West to East

Untainted by the land

It covers grey, unfertile earth

And buries it with her hand

Trees stripped bare of all they’ve known

In the wind they twist and turn

Naked from the earth they sprung

Naked they will return

Like Job they cry with nothing left

In despair they’ve mourned for days

Yet still to God they lift their boughs

And sing their broken praise

The winter of the soul seems long

The night is never done

But warmth shall thaw my aching heart

And dawn will surely come
